How long does it take to learn Portuguese?
The US Foreign Service Institute reaches professional working proficiency in Portuguese in about 600 class hours, its easiest band. At an hour a day with a tutor, conversational Portuguese (B1) lands around 14 months. The figure hides the one decision that matters: European Portuguese is meaningfully harder to understand than Brazilian, and you have to choose before you start.

Portuguese sits at the floor of the Foreign Service Institute's easiest band: 600 class hours to Speaking-3 / Reading-3, the same figure as Spanish and Italian.
That single number hides the most consequential fork on this site.

The decision you make before hour one
Brazilian and European Portuguese share a written standard, and their speakers understand one another without much trouble. For a learner, they are not equally hard.
European Portuguese reduces unstressed vowels close to vanishing. Syllables collapse, consonants cluster, and word boundaries stop being audible. Brazilian Portuguese keeps its vowels open and its syllables distinct — which is what people mean when they call it more musical, and what matters to a learner is simply that you can hear where one word ends and the next begins.
The practical result: someone who trained on Brazilian audio typically finds European speech close to unintelligible on first contact, and needs weeks to adjust. The reverse gap is much smaller.
Neither is better. But the difficulty is not symmetrical, and every guide that gives one hour figure for "Portuguese" is glossing over it. Choose on where you are actually going, then commit — mixing your input sources early is the fastest way to understand neither.
Where the time actually goes
Nasal vowels
The main pronunciation cost. Portuguese has vowels pronounced through the nose — não, mãe, bom, irmão — and English has no equivalent as a distinct vowel sound. They carry meaning, so approximating them is not enough, and they need dedicated practice rather than absorption.
Beyond that, Portuguese is not hard to pronounce. The nasals are the tax.
Verbs, including one nothing else has
The conjugation load is comparable to Spanish, with the same tenses and the same subjunctive logic.
Portuguese adds the personal infinitive — an infinitive that conjugates for person, which no other major Romance language has. It is genuinely useful once it clicks, and there is nothing in English to hang it on, so it takes a while.
The false friends are worse than usual with Spanish
Not because there are more of them, but because the languages are close enough that you will not notice. Embaraçada is embarrassed in Portuguese and pregnant in Spanish. Exquisito is delicious in Spanish; esquisito is weird in Portuguese. When two languages are 80% mutually transparent, the 20% catches you at speed.

If you already speak Spanish
The largest discount in the Romance family, and our estimate applies it — B2 drops from around 460 hours to about 320.
It is also the one place on this site where the discount comes with a named hazard.
Portunhol. Spanish and Portuguese are close enough that a Spanish speaker can be understood in Portuguese almost immediately by substituting sounds and hoping. That works. People will follow you. And because it works, it becomes stable — a permanent mixture that never resolves into Portuguese, because nothing forces it to.
The learners who get past it do one specific thing: they get corrected by a person, early, on the differences they are papering over. Comprehension arrives nearly free; production is where the Spanish has to be actively unlearned.
What actually works
- Pick your variety before you pick your materials. This decision has more effect on your listening difficulty than anything else you will choose.
- Drill nasal vowels deliberately. They will not arrive by absorption and they carry meaning.
- If you speak Spanish, get corrected early and often. Being understood is not the same as being right, and Portuguese lets you confuse the two for years.
- Do not mix Brazilian and European input while your ear is forming. Once you can follow one comfortably, the other takes weeks rather than months.
