Choose the missing part of your routine

Start by writing down what is failing in your present routine. If you spend your available study time deciding what to study, a prepared sequence may be the missing piece. If a teacher or textbook already supplies that sequence, buying another curriculum may duplicate work. If you understand lessons but cannot recall their vocabulary later, investigate a review workflow. These are different problems; an app comparison that collapses them into a single score cannot tell you which purchase, if any, addresses yours.

What the official documentation establishes

Babbel describes structured lessons and review activities. That documents the product's intended workflow, not an independently measured advantage over Anki. The Anki manual describes creating or importing cards and scheduling their next review after you rate your recall. Anki therefore does schedule review; what it does not supply by itself is a complete, teacher-selected language curriculum. You remain responsible for the material you put into it.

A practical comparison you can run yourself

Choose a small task that matters to you, such as introducing your work or asking for directions. Use a relevant course lesson if available, then attempt the task without looking at its prompts. Separately, make a small set of cards from material you understand and have permission to use. Review them, close the deck, and attempt the same task again later. Keep notes about what you can actually say, what you merely recognise, and what still needs explanation or feedback.

Include setup time, not just time inside a lesson. For the course, record whether the next activity is relevant and whether you understand why an answer is wrong. For cards, record time spent choosing material, checking meanings and repairing confusing prompts. If maintaining the deck uses the time you intended for speaking or listening, reduce the deck before concluding that you need another tool. This is a suggested self-check, not a controlled experiment or a claim that we observed these results in real users.

Check the actual cost on your device

Anki's official site distinguishes the free desktop program and free AnkiDroid from the paid official AnkiMobile iOS app. Do not assume every similarly named mobile app is the same product. For Babbel, check the language, billing period, renewal terms and cancellation route on the offer you are considering. This page does not quote a newly verified subscription price: the cost table above retains its own earlier check date.

When to use both, or buy neither

A course plus a small deck can make sense when each has a clear job: the course introduces material, and your cards revisit selected items. Do not copy an entire paid course into a public deck. If your existing class and notes already solve both jobs, adding an app may create more administration than practice. Neither a streak nor a growing card count establishes that you can handle an unpredictable conversation. Keep your decision tied to the task you wanted to perform, rather than to the number of activities a product lets you complete.
